As the market for frozen dumplings, glutinous rice balls, vegetables, seafood, meat, and ready-to-eat meals continues to grow, material requirements for frozen food packaging film are becoming increasingly demanding. Compared with ordinary food packaging, frozen food packaging must withstand prolonged exposure to low temperatures, often at -18°C or below. In addition to print quality, packaging films need suitable low-temperature resistance, impact strength, puncture resistance, and heat-sealing performance.

So, how should manufacturers choose the right materials for frozen food packaging roll film?

General Frozen Foods: PET/PE

For products such as frozen vegetables, dumplings, and glutinous rice balls, PET/PE is a commonly used packaging structure.

PET offers good stiffness, dimensional stability, and printability, helping meet the appearance requirements of food packaging. PE serves as the heat-sealing layer, providing sealing performance and moisture protection. For products with moderate barrier requirements and a focus on cost control, PET/PE offers a cost-effective packaging option.

Frozen Meat and Seafood: Consider Nylon-Based Structures

Frozen meat and seafood may contain sharp parts, such as bones and shells, which place greater demands on the puncture and impact resistance of packaging films.

For these products, incorporating a nylon (NY) layer, such as in a PET/NY/PE structure, can be considered. Nylon offers good toughness and puncture resistance while maintaining relatively good mechanical properties at low temperatures, helping reduce the risk of pouch breakage during transportation.

If vacuum packaging is also required, the material structure should be further determined based on the actual packaging equipment and application requirements.

Long-Shelf-Life Products: Choose High-Barrier Materials

For certain frozen foods that are sensitive to oxygen, light, and moisture, high-barrier structures containing VMPET (metallized PET) or AL (aluminum foil) can be considered, such as PET/VMPET/PE and PET/AL/PE.

VMPET provides good barrier properties while maintaining an attractive packaging appearance, while aluminum foil offers higher barrier performance. However, not all frozen foods require high-barrier packaging film. Material selection should be based on product characteristics, shelf-life requirements, and storage conditions to avoid unnecessary packaging costs.

Automatic Packaging: Match the Film with Your Equipment

For manufacturers using automatic packaging machines, selecting frozen food rollstock film involves more than choosing the material structure. Film width, thickness, heat-sealing temperature, seal strength, packaging speed, and machine operating conditions must also be considered.

In particular, the PE heat-sealing layer should be selected according to actual packaging conditions. Otherwise, issues such as weak seals, leakage, or cracking after low-temperature transportation may occur.

GQ PACK: Customized Roll Film for Frozen Food Packaging

No single packaging material is suitable for every frozen food product. Frozen vegetables, dumplings, meat, seafood, and prepared meals each have different packaging performance requirements.
